Matthews is a large suburban town of Charlotte located in southeastern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The population was 27,198 according to the 2010 Census.
In the early 1800's, Matthews was fertile farmland, and as settlers moved into the area, they cut down so many trees that the land was unofficially called "Stumptown". Incorporated in 1879, Matthews is just about halfway between Charlotte and Monroe, NC and offers a small town feel with big city amenities. Downtown Matthews' Train Depot/Visitor's Center, the McDowell Arts Center and Matthews Playhouse are beloved by residents and visitors alike. Stop by the Matthews Community Farmer's Market on the weekends – it's the largest farmer's market in the greater Charlotte area with local products from 50 miles around Matthews – or walk through town for the Matthews Alive festival and admire the many works of public art that local artists have donated. Shop at the boutiques and stores downtown or check out big-box stores at Sycamore Commons and Matthews Festival.
