About Fort Mill
One of the most highly sought after communities in the Charlotte area is the town of Fort Mill, South Carolina. Fort Mill was originally known as Little York but then renamed to Fort Mill because it was contain both a fort and a grist mill (go figure). The fort was never built. Fort Mill was incorporated in 1873 and has grown from the small historic downtown area to now stretching from the Sugar Creek to the Catawba River.
Interstate 77 cuts Fort Mill in half, with the downtown area on the east side of 77 and Baxter Village and surrounding communities to the west. Baxter Village is a planned community featuring a robust downtown area with shops, restaurants and a Starbucks along with multiple community centers and varying housing types.
Fort Mill is also a popular place for bicycling enthusiast as HWY 21 has wide shoulders and the city as a number of greenways. One such popular outdoor spots is the Anne Springs Close Greenway – a privately operated 1,200 acre park on land that was once owned by the Springs family. The Greenway includes a few lakes for kayaking, trails for hiking and mountain biking and even spots to camp.
