Located just 20 miles north of Uptown Charlotte lies the town of Cornelius. With a population of just 27,000, Cornelius is best known for its Lake Norman coastline, which is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina and the town's western neighborhood. The Town of Cornelius is relatively young and was formed by R.J. Stough as a place to weigh cotton in 1883. The weigh station turned into a cotton mill and the cotton mill became an incorporated town in 1905.
The town is named after J. B. Cornelius, a stockholder in the mill. Cornelius became a popular vacation destination in the 1960's as the creation of Lake Norman. Some of the early land owners along Lake Norman were former land owners of parcels now underwater. Others purchased lots from Duke Energy, which started selling lakefront lots in 1977.
Today, Cornelius is a bustling town complete with golf courses, restaurants, shopping, as well as waterfront properties. The 104 acre Jetton Park is a popular spring through fall attraction and features walking and biking trails, a beach, tennis courts, and playground. Additionally, Birkdale Village is a premier north Mecklenburg shopping, dining, and movie destination.
