At the heart of Charlotte is the Uptown. Established in 1768, Charlotte was designed by Thomas Polk as a walking city, with the intersection of Trade and Tryon as its core. Unlike most cities, Charlotte's center city or Uptown is laid out on a grid on a 45-degree angle, since that was the path that generations of Native Americans used to travel from the mountains to the coast.
Uptown Charlotte is divided into four wards (initially for voting purposes) and all four wards remain intact today. The wards are divided by their location in relation to Trade and Tryon with First Ward being southeast of Trade and Tryon, Second Ward is southwest, Third Ward is northwest, and Fourth Ward is northeast.
Trade and commerce remains at the core of Charlotte's center city. Charlotte is the second largest banking center in the United States and is home to such noted brands as Bank of America, Wells Fargo, First Citizens, Fifth Third, Ally and BB&T among others. Aside from the banks, Uptown is also home to Duke Energy, Shaw Power, Johnson and Wales, Chiquita as well as 1,200 other businesses.
Uptown Charlotte isn't solely a place for business. It is also home to the Carolina Panthers NFL team, Charlotte Knights, Charlotte Checkers, and Charlotte Hornets NBA team. The North Carolina Music Factory is in Fourth Ward and is home to the Uptown Amphitheater, Comedy Zone, VGBG Beer Garden and the Fillmore. Additionally, there are an endless supply of great restaurants including Ruth's Chris, Morton's Steakhouse, Halcyon, E2 Emeril's Eatery, 5Church, Blackfinn, and Alexander Michael's. The Epicenter also has options for entertainment, dining, shopping and late night fun.
Residential real estate in Uptown consists mostly of mid-rise and high-rise condos, townhomes and apartments. Uptown's Fourth Ward has some of the city's most remarkable and oldest Victorian homes as well as bungalows and other styles near 8th, 9th and 10th streets. Throughout the center city as well, you will find parks and fountains and the Little Sugar Creek Greenway is just outside of Second Ward.
